The RB26DETT

Twin-turbocharged 2.6L inline-six. 280PS (276hp) JDM — typically 320-380hp in export tune. Hand-built by master craftsmen at Nissan's Yokohama plant. Each engine came with a numbered plaque certifying its builder.

BNR34 M-Spec interior — Recaro seats with R embroidery, chrome shifter

The M-Spec Cockpit

The M-Spec (the comfort-focused trim) added Recaro seats with the iconic R embroidery, special Nardi-style steering wheel, and improved sound insulation. All R34 GT-Rs came with the same driver-focused dash — the only variation was seat material and stitching.

Variant Counts

Every variant was built for a specific reason — homologation, export, performance upgrade, or comfort. The rarest homologation N1 cars were never officially sold to the public.

Highlights & Rare Finds

The interesting pieces. The cars enthusiasts screenshot, the ones that show up in auction headlines, the variants that made the R34 legend. These are the callouts.

Bayside Blue (TV2)

The halo color. 1 in 4 R34 GT-Rs left the factory in Bayside Blue. Tochigi-built cars couldn't get it — only Musashimurayama. If yours is Bayside, it was Series 1 or an early Series 2.

Midnight Purple II (LV4)

The "Tiffany Blue" color that shifts green in sunlight, purple in shade. 346 built across Series 1 only. Discontinued for Series 2 and replaced by the rarer Midnight Purple III.

Midnight Purple III (LX0)

The darker, more purple-only follow-up to MP-II. Available only in Series 2 books. Under 200 built — collectors pay serious premiums.

Icelandic Pearl White (QT1)

The unicorn color. A single BNR34 was ever painted QT1. Documented in the archived R34 registry data. Nobody knows where it is now.

V-Spec N1

Homologation special. 38 cars only. Stripped of ABS, audio, A/C, rear wiper. White only. Built to meet Group N racing rules. Nismo still has 2 in their Z-Tune program.

V-Spec II N1 LEGENDARY

The rarest standard R34 GT-R. 18 cars. 14 went to Nismo for the Z-Tune rebuild program (each became a Z-Tune, sold for $110K+ in 2003). Only 4 are believed to exist in original N1 form. White only.

Great Britain Export

The only right-hand drive export market that got a real allocation. Built in Musashimurayama with the JDM spec, then shipped. Came in Bayside Blue, Black, Active Red, Athlete Silver, Lightning Yellow.

Other Export Markets

10 to Hong Kong, 5 to New Zealand, 10 to Singapore, and just 2 New Zealand V-Spec II cars. Total: 27 export units across non-GB markets. Most stayed in JDM collections after the 25-year import rule opened in 2024.

Pre-Production Cars

BNR34-000051 through 000104 are pre-production validation cars. Built before Series 1 started. Many were used for crash testing, emissions certification, and press fleet. Surviving examples are highly documented.

M-Spec Nür

Comfort-tuned Nür suspension. 285 built. The "gentleman's R34" — every Nür chassis upgrade, plus the plush M-Spec interior. Often overlooked, increasingly collectible.

Monthly Production

BNR34-only monthly production figures, broken down by variant. January 1999 was the launch month — 1,286 cars shipped, the highest month ever. Production then settled into a steady ~200/month rhythm before winding down through 2002.
