About the HR34

The HR34 was the entry-level R34 Skyline. The RB20DE is the same engine family as the RB26DETT (just one cylinder pair less, 600cc smaller), but naturally aspirated and detuned for fuel economy and emissions. ~150hp at the crank, paired with a 4-speed automatic (standard) or 5-speed manual (option), and rear-wheel drive. Not a performance car — but a Skyline nonetheless.

The HR34 was sold in Japan and select export markets (Brunei being the documented export destination). It was the affordable option for buyers who wanted the R34 look and chassis dynamics without the RB26DETT running costs. Many were used as company cars or family vehicles, and have led harder lives than their GT-R siblings.

Highlights & What to Look For

The HR34 isn't collectible in the same way as the BNR34, but it's the most accessible R34 — and the 100-car Series 2 batch has become an interesting footnote. The Brunei export cars are the rarest documented VINs.

Total Production

14,938 cars over 5 years. Almost 3x the GT-R production. The HR34 was the volume seller in the R34 family.

RB20DE Engine

2.0L naturally aspirated inline-6. The same engine family as the RB26DETT, but smaller and less stressed. ~150hp stock. Tuners swap in the RB25DET or RB26DETT for real power.

4-Speed Automatic

4-speed automatic was standard equipment. A 5-speed manual was optional but rare. The HR34 was sold as the "easy" R34 — comfort and style over performance. The slushbox hurts collector value but keeps purchase price low.

Series 2: 100 Units

The Series 2 VIN range (HR34-200001 to HR34-200101) is just 100 cars. Likely an end-of-production run or dealer allocation batch. The narrow VIN range makes these easy to identify.

Brunei Export

Combined 38 cars exported to Brunei (14 Series 1 + 24 Series 2). Right-hand drive, 4AT standard. Some of the rarest documented HR34 VINs in existence.

The Affordable R34

While BNR34 GT-Rs are now $80K-$200K+, HR34s trade in the $8K-$15K range. Same chassis, same styling, 1/10th the price. If you want an R34 you can actually drive daily, the HR34 is the play.

Monthly Production

HR34 production peaked in mid-1999 at around 1,500 units/month. Output gradually declined through 2001 as the R34 was being phased out. The Series 2 batch at the end was a small 100-car run.

Data source & verification: HR34 totals, variants, and color data in this page are sourced from the archived public R34 registry data (HR34 VIN table snapshot, Jan 2018, compiled from JDM dealer records, auction sheets, and community submissions). The OverRevving VIN registry holds 14,938 individual HR34 VINs spanning the full production run. Note: The archived R34 registry data focused primarily on the BNR34 GT-R chassis; the HR34 variant and color breakdown on this page is sourced from the HR34-specific snapshot of the same registry. The 21-unit delta between variant sum (14,917) and total (14,938) likely represents pre-production or special-order VINs not categorized by variant.
