Series Breakdown
The ER34 was built across two plants and two body styles (sedan and coupe) over 5 production blocks. The 4-door sedan variants (25GT, 25GT X) dominate the early VIN range; the 2-door coupe (GT V) appears in smaller numbers throughout.
ER34 Colours
Standard ER34 paint options offered during production. Codes match the Nissan color plate under the hood. Sample colors are approximate — actual paint appearance varies by light, age, and clear coat condition.
Variant Counts
ER34 was the volume car — RB25DE (NA) and RB25DET (turbo) in sedan (25GT) and coupe (GT V) bodies. The 25GT X was the mid-spec. Sedan production dwarfed coupe at roughly 4:1.
| Variant | Count | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 25GT Turbo Series 1 | 15,458 | The bread and butter. RB25DET turbo sedan. The most-built single R34 variant. |
| 25GT X Turbo Series 1 | 3,590 | Higher-spec turbo sedan — better interior, BBS wheels, climate control. |
| 25GT Turbo Series 2 | 2,863 | Later production turbo sedan. |
| GT V Series 1 (coupe) | 1,951 | 2-door coupe with the RB25 turbo. The "ER34 GT-R for the rest of us." |
| GT V Series 2 (coupe) | 1,332 | Later coupe production. |
| 25GT X Series 1 (NA) | 6,175 | Mid-spec naturally-aspirated sedan. |
| 25GT X Series 2 (NA) | 1,000 | Later mid-spec NA sedan. |
| 25GT Series 1 (NA base) | 4,587 | Base naturally-aspirated sedan. Cheapest R34 Skyline. |
| 25GT Series 2 (NA base) | 274 | Late-run base NA sedan. |
| Total | 37,228 | Total ER34 production across all series and variants. |
Note: Source database (archived R34 registry data, ER34 VIN table) totals 37,339 ER34 VINs. The 111-unit delta from the variant sum is unaccounted in the source breakdown (likely a small batch of special-order or prototype vehicles not categorized by variant).
Highlights & What to Look For
The ER34 was the everyman R34 — affordable, plentiful, and overlooked for years. That's changing. The 2-door GT V coupe in Gun Grey is the sleeper of the era.
25GT Turbo (S1)
The 4-door sedan with the RB25DET turbo. Boring to look at, fast in a straight line, and the variant that made the R34 Skyline name into a household word in Japan.
GT V Coupe
The 2-door coupe. Looks almost identical to the GT-R from 20 feet. RB25DET turbo, RWD, HICAS rear steering. 1,951 in Series 1 — getting rare, getting valued.
Series 2 (late VIN range)
The VINs starting at 200001 are the late-2000-onward production run. Often overlooked but mechanically the most refined — last of the line.
Sparkling Silver (WV2) Dominance
Sparkling Silver was the most-painted color on the ER34 Turbo, with 8,007 cars leaving the factory in WV2. Combined with KV2 Athlete Silver (7,165), silver tones accounted for ~40% of ER34 production. If you want to stand out, look for the rare AR2 Active Red (1,035) or BP9 Dark Blue Pearl (1,488) cars.
3W9 Black/White Two-Tone
898 cars with the Black/White (3W9) two-tone paint, primarily on Series 2 Turbo and GT-V models. Most were export-delivered to Hong Kong and New Zealand. Increasingly collectible for the rare period-correct two-tone look.
RB25DE vs RB25DET
The NA cars (DE) and turbo cars (DET) are mechanically very different. DE is the same block with different internals, ~200hp. DET is the turbo version, ~250hp. The 25GT-X is NA-spec with a higher compression for better fuel economy.
Monthly Production
ER34 production ran parallel to the BNR34 from January 1998 through November 2002. Peak production was 1999-2000 when Nissan was building both GT-R and non-GT-R Skylines at full tilt.
