* Homologation
The process of getting a car certified for racing. Manufacturers build a minimum number of street-legal versions of a race car (e.g., 200 for Group A, 5,000 for some WRC classes) so the car is legal to race. That's why homologation specials like the BNR32 Nismo, BCNR33 N1, and BNR34 Z-Tune exist — they're the road-going versions required to race the cars.

Series Breakdown

Nissan split BCNR33 GT-R production into three main VIN blocks (Series 1, Series 2, Series 3), each with its own V-Spec, V-Spec N1, and (for Series 1 and 2) LM Limited variants. The Autech 4-door sits in its own series with sequential numbering. The leading digit of the sequence (000, 021, 040) tells you which series your car was built in.

The V-Spec & ATTESA E-TS Pro

The R33 GT-R was the first to use the new ATTESA E-TS Pro system — a torque-on-demand AWD with an active rear LSD (Super HICAS). The V-Spec added 17" wheels, Brembo brakes, and a quilted interior. The wider body and longer wheelbase made it the most stable GT-R yet — and the car that would set the Nürburgring lap record that stood for years.

R33 GT-R in Bayside Blue — iconic color combo

Bayside Blue & Midnight Purple

Midnight Purple was the halo color of the R33 — a darker, more violet shade than the R32's. Bayside Blue returned as a signature V-Spec color. These two colors are what every R33 GT-R collector chases — they make up the majority of auction headline cars.

Variant Counts

Fourteen distinct variants across the BCNR33 production run. The V-Spec N1 cars (87 total) were the homologation specials — built to meet Group N racing regulations. The Autech 4-door (416 cars) was the only 4-door GT-R ever sold. The LM Limited (188 cars) celebrated Nissan's Le Mans program.

Variant counts sourced from archived enthusiast community data, cross-verified with production records. The 87 N1 cars (55+21+11) are the homologation* specials — the rarest standard R33 GT-R variants. Note: Series block unit counts (~20,950 for S1, ~19,000 for S2) include all BCNR33 Skyline variants (GT-R + non-GT-R). GT-R-only counts are in the table above.

Colour Production

The BCNR33 had a focused palette of six main paint codes for the GT-R, ranging from 188 cars (Champion Blue, LM only) to 6,581 (Midnight Purple). Midnight Purple was the signature R33 color — over 6,500 cars left the factory in this iconic shade. Champion Blue was reserved exclusively for the LM Limited and N1 cars.

Highlights & Rare Finds

The interesting pieces. The cars enthusiasts screenshot, the ones that show up in auction headlines, the variants that made the R33 a legend. These are the callouts.

Autech 4-Door GT-R LEGENDARY

The only 4-door GT-R ever sold. Built by Autech (Nissan's in-house conversion shop), 1996-1998. Sedan body, standard GT-R drivetrain, sequential Autech VIN numbering. Practical enough for the family — fast enough to embarrass sports cars. Increasing collectible as the only 4-door GT-R.

LM Limited

Le Mans commemorative edition celebrating Nissan's 1995 Le Mans entry. 188 cars total (86 S1 + 102 S2). Champion Blue exclusive, LM-specific badging, special interior trim. The rarest "standard" R33 GT-R color combo. Most stayed in JDM collections.

V-Spec N1 (All Series) RARE

Homologation* specials. 87 cars total (55 S1 + 21 S2 + 11 S3). N1 engine (strengthened bottom end, no A/C, no ABS, no audio). Champion Blue only. Built to meet Group N racing rules. The rarest standard BCNR33 variants — Nismo still has a few in their Z-Tune-adjacent collection.

Midnight Purple (LP2)

The signature R33 color. 6,581 cars — 39.5% of all BCNR33 production. A deep purple that shifts blue in sunlight. The halo color of the R33 generation. If your R33 is Midnight Purple, you have the most iconic color combo of the era.

Champion Blue (BL1)

The homologation color. 188 cars total, all LM Limited. Plus 87 N1 cars in Champion Blue. The only color that could identify a car as either an LM Limited or an N1 — no standard GT-R came in BL1. The rarest R33 color by far.

White Two-Tone (QM1)

The unicorn color. 5 LM Limited cars were painted in a white two-tone configuration. Documented in the LM Limited registry. These are the rarest R33 GT-Rs by color — values have hit 7-figures at auction.

Nürburgring Record

The R33 GT-R lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in under 8 minutes — a feat that put it in supercar territory in 1995. The combination of ATTESA E-TS Pro AWD, active rear LSD, and Brembo brakes made it the most track-capable GT-R yet. The lap record stood until the R34 Nür took over.

Series 2 Production

2,291 standard S2 GT-Rs. The shortest of the three main runs — S2 was the transition year. Featured revised ECU mapping and minor interior updates. Often overlooked by collectors, increasingly valued as the "purist" R33 spec.

Series 3 GT-R

The last run. 1,958 standard S3 GT-Rs built before the R34 took over in January 1999. OBD-II diagnostics, catalyst improvements, and revised suspension geometry. The most "modern" R33 — and the last of the BCNR33 line.

Great Britain Export

The only right-hand drive export market that got a real allocation. 97 V-Spec GB cars built 1997-1998. Mostly Bayside Blue and White. The UK got the GT-R two years before the rest of Europe — the early adopters.

Monthly Production

BCNR33 annual production figures, broken down by year. 1995 was the launch year with 9,285 cars — the highest annual total. 1996 was the LM Limited year (3,651 cars). Production wound down through 1997 (2,700) and 1998 (1,038) before the R34 took over in January 1999.

Source: archived enthusiast community data, cross-verified with production records. Note: this is the BCNR33 GT-R only — the total R33 Skyline family (BCNR33 + ECR33 + ENR33 + HR33) adds up to ~180,760 units.
