- * Homologation
- The process of getting a car certified for racing. Manufacturers build a minimum number of street-legal versions of a race car (e.g., 200 for Group A, 5,000 for some WRC classes) so the car is legal to race. That's why homologation specials like the BNR32 Nismo, BCNR33 N1, and BNR34 Z-Tune exist — they're the road-going versions required to race the cars.

Series Breakdown
Nissan split BNR32 GT-R production into five main VIN blocks (Series 1, Nismo, Series 2, Series 3), plus the homologation V-Spec and N1 variants. The leading digit of the sequence (000, 100, 210, 212, 300) tells you which series your car was built in.
The V-Spec
The first "Victory Specification" GT-R. Released February 1993 to celebrate the R32's 29-consecutive-win streak in Group A racing. Added ATTESA E-TS reprogramming, stiffer suspension, 17" wheels, and Brembo brakes. Gun Grey Metallic (KH2) was the signature V-Spec color.
Group A Homologation
The R32 GT-R was built to race. To compete in Group A, Nissan had to build 5,000 road cars — they built 43,937. The 560 Nismo cars were a separate homologation program, and the 118 N1 cars were the ultimate stripped-down Group A weapon. 29 consecutive race wins. The car that earned the nickname "Godzilla."
Variant Counts
Ten distinct variants across the BNR32 production run. The Nismo, N1, and V-Spec N1 cars were the homologation specials — the rarest of the rare, built to meet Group A racing regulations.
| Variant | Count | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| GT-R (Series 1) | 17,316 | First main production run. The "base" R32 GT-R — already had ATTESA E-TS AWD, HICAS four-wheel steering, and the legendary RB26DETT. |
| Nismo LEGENDARY | 560 | Group A homologation* special. Built between August 1990 and February 1991. Featured an uprated RB26DETT (320ps), Recaro seats, and BBS wheels. The rarest standard production R32. |
| GT-R (Series 2) | 11,187 | Updated ECU mapping, revised ATTESA calibration, and minor interior trim changes. Built from February 1992 onward. |
| N1 LEGENDARY | 118 | Homologation* special. N1-spec engine with strengthened internals, no A/C, no ABS, no audio. Stealth Grey only. Built for Group N racing. |
| GT-R (Series 3) | 11,827 | Final production run. Added OBD-II diagnostics, catalyst improvements, and revised suspension geometry. Built from August 1993. |
| V-Spec | 1,396 | Track-focused. Added 17" BBS wheels, Brembo brakes, stiffer suspension, and revised ATTESA E-TS programming. Gun Grey Metallic (KH2) signature color. |
| V-Spec N1 RARE | 64 | Lightweight homologation*. N1 engine, no ABS, no audio, no A/C. Champion Blue (BL1) only. Built for Group N. |
| V-Spec II | 1,306 | Updated V-Spec. Added active rear LSD, revised aero, and V-Spec II badging. Released February 1994. |
| V-Spec II N1 LEGENDARY | 63 | The ultimate R32. V-Spec II chassis + N1 engine + active LSD. Champion Blue only. The rarest homologation* special of the BNR32 run. |
| Unknown / Misc. | 100 | Records with unverified variant assignment. Likely early Series 1 pre-production cars. |
| Total | 43,937 | Cross-verified with archived enthusiast community data. |
Variant counts sourced from archived enthusiast community data. Cross-verified against Nissan dealer records and JDM auction data. Annual production figures (1989–1994) sum to 43,899 — the 38-unit difference vs the total reflects pre-production and validation vehicles not captured in annual data.
Colour Production
The BNR32 had seven main paint codes, ranging from 1,145 cars (Dark Blue) to 19,729 (Gun Grey Metallic). Gun Grey was the signature GT-R color — the most produced, and the V-Spec signature shade.
Note: Champion Blue (BL1) was the V-Spec N1 / V-Spec II N1 exclusive color, and Stealth Grey was the N1-only color. These are not included in the main count above.
Highlights & Rare Finds
The interesting pieces. The cars enthusiasts screenshot, the ones that show up in auction headlines, the variants that made the R32 a legend. These are the callouts.
Nismo Homologation*
The 560 Nismo cars were built between August 1990 and February 1991. Featured an uprated RB26DETT (320ps), Recaro seats, BBS wheels, and unique badging. The rarest standard production R32 GT-R — under 560 built.
N1 Homologation* LEGENDARY
The ultimate Group A weapon. 118 cars. N1-spec engine (strengthened bottom end, revised turbo, no A/C, no ABS, no audio). Stealth Grey only. These are the cars that won 29 consecutive Group A races.
29 Consecutive Wins
The R32 GT-R won 29 consecutive Group A races between 1990 and 1993. The streak ended only when the JTC (Japanese Touring Car) rules changed. The nickname "Godzilla" was born in Australia when motoring journalists refused to call it a Skyline.
V-Spec Launch
The V-Spec was released February 1993 to celebrate the racing success. "Victory Specification" — added 17" BBS wheels, Brembo brakes, stiffer suspension, and revised ATTESA E-TS programming. Gun Grey Metallic (KH2) was the signature V-Spec color.
V-Spec N1 RARE
V-Spec chassis with N1 engine. 64 cars. Champion Blue (BL1) only. Built for Group N racing homologation*. The rarest standard V-Spec variant of the BNR32 run.
V-Spec II N1 LEGENDARY
The ultimate R32. V-Spec II chassis + N1 engine + active rear LSD. 63 cars. Champion Blue only. The last homologation* special of the BNR32 run — built February 1994, just months before the R33 replaced it.
Gun Grey Metallic (KH2)
The signature R32 GT-R color. Nearly 45% of all BNR32 cars left the factory in Gun Grey. The V-Spec signature color — if yours is Gun Grey with the V-Spec badge, it's one of the most iconic JDM color combos ever made.
Dark Blue (TH1)
The rarest standard BNR32 color. 1,145 cars across the full production run. A deep, navy blue that was more common on the GTS-T (HCR32) but appeared sparingly on the GT-R. Often overlooked, increasingly collectible.
Nürburgring Dominance
The R32 GT-R lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in under 8 minutes — a feat that put it in supercar territory in 1989. The combination of AWD, twin-turbo, and sub-1,500kg curb weight made it a weapon on track.
43,937 Road Cars Built
To race in Group A, Nissan had to build at least 5,000 road cars. They built 43,937 — the only production car to so wildly exceed its homologation* requirement. The R32 GT-R is the one that earned it.
Monthly Production
BNR32-only annual production figures, broken down by year. 1989 was the launch year (August start), 1990 was peak production (Nismo run), and production continued through December 1994 when the R33 took over.
