Export VIN Formats

Why Export VINs Look Different

When Nissan exported cars to certain markets, the VIN format changed to comply with local registration requirements. The Japanese domestic market (JDM) VIN format differs from the export format used in Great Britain, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and other markets.

FormatExampleMarketNotes
BNR34-XXXXXXBNR34-000201JDM (Japan)Standard Japanese domestic market format. First VIN = BNR34-000051.
JN1GAPR34UXXXXXXXJN1GAPR34U0000101Great BritainJIS-based export format. JN1 = Japan, G = Nissan, A = Passenger car, P = Model family, R34 = chassis, U = model year, then sequential.
JN1GAPR34UXXXXXXXJN1GAPR34U0000180Hong Kong / NZ / SGSame export format used across multiple markets. Only 81 GT-Rs exported to GB, 10 to HK, 5 to NZ, 10 to SG.

Series Sequence

How Series Are Assigned

Each chassis code was divided into production series based on manufacturing changes, model year updates, and plant transitions. Series 1 covers the first block of sequential VINs. Series 2 begins when Nissan updated the production line — typically a new model year or plant change. Pre-Production VINs (e.g. BNR34-000051 to BNR34-000104) were built before official series production began.

BNR34-000051 → BNR34-000104
000051–000104 Series 1 Pre-Production — 54 units, Musashimurayama plant. These were pre-series validation cars before mass production of Series 1 began at BNR34-000201.
000201–007131 Series 1 — 6,931 units, Musashimurayama. The bulk of R34 GT-R production. Contains the majority of well-known special editions (V-Spec, V-Spec II, M-Spec, Nür).
400001–404495 Series 2 — 4,495 units, Tochigi plant. Series 2 began at a different VIN range to clearly separate production at the new plant. Tochigi-built cars used the 400xxx sequence.

Search Tips

When searching the OverRevving Registry, you can enter a full VIN (e.g. BNR34-005000) or a partial prefix (e.g. BNR34-000). The search matches against First VIN and Last VIN in each range block, so you can find where your car falls in the production sequence.

If your exact VIN isn't in the database yet, search the range it falls in — e.g. BNR34-005000 falls in the Series 1 range (BNR34-000201 to BNR34-007131). You can then claim that range and submit your specific VIN for verification.

Example: Finding your R34 GT-R position
If your VIN is BNR34-005000:
1. Search "BNR34-005000" in the registry
2. It falls in the Series 1 range: BNR34-000201 → BNR34-007131
3. Position: car #5,000 of 11,577 total R34 GT-Rs produced
4. Click "Claim" to submit your car's details
